The internet is largely untamed – with all the good & bad that comes with it. After communities formed spaces of their own rules & freedoms, governments & companies are trying to shape it on their behalves.
One tool to bring offline rules to online spaces is real-name registration. Loved by authoritarians, now popular in “western democracies” & “W Social”. Often argued to protect “the children”, “the women”, “democracy”.
Are we better people if we are controlled?And who controls the controllers?
In June a company released a “new social network”, called "W Social" and claimed to have a better one, because of real-name registration. They promised no bots but human people that will behave brilliantly because you have to hand over your personal data in form of a governmental ID.
They talked about digital sovereignty & a network “Made in Europe”. They claimed wanting to safe “democracy” by demanding your governmental issued ID.
What is this real-name registration and does the Fediverse need it as well to “save democracy and women”? Isn’t it good when Teenagers do not have to see everything?
What data driven power do we transfer if private companies are enabled to store our private information? And what happens if the government know what you did last summer online?
Are we behaving as better humans if we use our official names?
Katika Kühnreich is a political scientist and sinologist with a focus on philosophy. She gained international reputation through a lecture at the Chaos Communication Congress 2017.
