Leave X is a civic project that encourages European politicians and political institutions to reduce their dependence on X and transition to healthier alternatives. This session will introduce the campaign and explore the democratic risks of platform dependence. It will also ask how people across the Fediverse and Bluesky can collaborate to reduce barriers to leaving X and take action.
The session will begin with a short presentation on the campaign, the democratic risks of relying on platforms controlled by billionaires and large corporations, and the lessons learned from trying to persuade politicians and institutions to leave X.
We will also consider the practical issue that not everyone who leaves X chooses the same alternative platform. Rather than treating these communities as competitors, we will discuss how they can become allies and explore ways to build bridges between them and reduce barriers to leaving X.
The second part will be interactive. Participants will work individually or in small groups to devise one concrete action that could reduce dependence on X, help a specific group overcome a migration barrier, or facilitate more effective collaboration between Bluesky and Fediverse users.
This activity can continue throughout FediDay. Remote participants will also be able to contribute, and a few initiatives will receive small prizes on Sunday.

Everton Zanella Alvarenga is an open-source and digital rights advocate who has a background in technology, civic technology, and organizational leadership. He founded the Brazilian chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation and previously worked on the Wikipedia Education Program at the Wikimedia Foundation. Alvarenga runs Leave X — Protect Democracy, an initiative that encourages politicians, institutions, civil society organizations, media organizations, and individuals to reduce their dependence on X and move toward healthier, more democratic alternatives.
