The Fediverse relies on the people and groups that provide instances. This talk presents research on the German-language Mastodon community, which is characterised by local or thematic instances that are often run by private individuals or volunteer groups. This can cause problems for administrators when costs rise or time is limited. This raises the question of what role organisations, such as associations, could play in sustaining the Fediverse as a digital commons.
