How can we scale a Fediverse instance with open-source based infrastructure for more resilience?
While the Fediverse is built on distributed instances, some can face disproportionate traffic, demanding high availability and zero-downtime updates. At fairkom, we addressed this by deploying Mastodon and PeerTube instances on Kubernetes, enabling horizontal scaling across multiple machines. To optimize performance, we built an Object Storage Server as a CDN, reducing latency not only for static assets but also for video chunks. However, decentralizing storage and implementing Single Sign-On (SSO) introduced unique challenges, from data consistency, retention policies to authentication workflows.
In this talk, we share lessons from hosting fairmove.net (Mastodon) and fair.tube (PeerTube) as part of the fairapps portfolio and a real-world customer case of Kubernetes-hosted Fediverse services in production - and why they might have had difficulties to adapt Fediverse services into their communication strategy.
Dr. Roland Alton-Scheidl heads the fairkom association and teaches at Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences.
