From garage sales to cultural visits, opportunities to come together are now largely captured by commercial platforms such as Facebook, Meetup, Instagram, etc.
Mobilizon provides an open-source alternative to private platforms. It allows local initiatives to reach their audience, without algorithmic constraints and without exposing personal data. This user-friendly and ethical tool enables the creation of groups, pages, events, activities and posts to bring people together and mobilize them.
Big companies currently dominate local life:
• algorithms determine content visibility and time spent on platforms,
• commercial interests often prevail over the public interest,
• selling private data is a building block for many business models,
• rules change unilaterally.
Mobilizon offers a digital common as an alternative:
• the source code is open (anyone can use and improve it)
• benefits go to a broad ecosystem (circular economy)
• personal data is protected
• the public interest prevails over private interests.
Mobilizon is not a single website but a network of websites:
• specialized platforms (e.g., for associations in a municipality or clubs in a federation),
• general-purpose platforms aggregating data from other Mobilizon platforms and many external sources.
Such decentralized and open source projects prevent from large scale personal data exploitation and concentration of power.
Plus, protocol ActivityPub enables those websites and others belonging to the Fediverse to share data – Mobilizon websites can share groups and events, and groups can be followed from Mastodon for instance.
