A Fantastic FediVariety Circus — And now: the report!
12.09, 18:00–18:30 (Europe/Berlin), Theatersaal
Sprache: English

FediVariety, supported by NLnet and SABOA, addresses EU public administrations' over-reliance on Big Tech social media and its risks to privacy and democratic values. Drawing on a study of the EDPS EU Voice/Video pilot across 40 institutional Fediverse accounts, the FediVariety report identifies key challenges and opportunities in adopting decentralised platforms —producing practical recommendations to guide public bodies toward fairer, more transparent digital communication.

In an era where digital communication increasingly shapes public-government relationships, integrating open-source alternatives is not just an opportunity but a necessity. It can strengthen democratic engagement and foster a more equitable digital future. Therefore, FediVariety’s research aims to contribute to knowledge about public communication strategies, empowering institutions and organisations to shape this future.

The FediVariety research report analyses initiatives like EDPS ’s EU Voice and EU Video through a transdisciplinary lens. It explores the socio-technical, organisational and political dimensions of these pilot projects. Using qualitative research methods, including exploratory interviews with key stakeholders and document analysis of internal EU communications, the study aims to gain critical insights into the factors influencing the implementation and operation of open-source alternatives.

The FediVariety report is foreseen to be published this summer.
